Fire Safety – Tis The Season to Check Your Heating Equipment

Home heating equipment fires are the second leading cause of home fires in Ontario. In 29% of home heating fires, the cause is a lack of routine maintenance. Check your heat source at the start of the season and schedule regular maintenance throughout.

  • Have your heating equipment serviced annually by a licensed technician
  • Change your furnace filter monthly
  • Ensure intake vents and exhaust vents are clear of snow and debris
  • Clean your chimney prior to the heating season and as needed throughout
  • Don’t burn anything other than clean wood in your woodstove/fireplace
  • Keep baseboard heaters clear of any combustibles
  • Only use certified (CSA/ULC approved) space heaters and don’t leave them unattended
  • Maintain working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detector
